Structural changes in retail: why Europe and the US are different

The traditional consensus is that where the US retail market goes, continental Europe and the UK inevitably follow. But with the seemingly amplified, negative noise coming out of the US around department store downsizing and in particular the impact that is having on shopping centres, should we expect a similar impact.

To help our clients achieve their ambitions, in this report we compare and contrast the two regions and cut through the noise. We analyse the fundamental differences between the markets, and explore some of the challenges and opportunities, in particular how responsive landlords and proactive management can and are helping mitigate the risks for shopping centres, on both sides of the Atlantic.
